Solar Heating
Systems
Solar thermal systems can provide
domestic water
heating, radiant floor heating, and heat for swimming pools, and
represent one
of the most cost-effective renewable energy systems available.
In most cases, you
can significatly reduce your current energy costs and add immediate
value to
your home or
business by installing a solar thermal
system.
Solar Heating System Benefits
»
Reduce your
energy costs - avoid the rising costs
of electric
power and natural gas from utility companies
» Obtain tax
credits and rebates - U.S. federal tax credit
covers up to 30% of the cost of a solar thermal system
» Generate
clean heat energy - power from the sun produces no pollution or
emissions
» Gain power
independence - rely completely on your own generating
capacity, and not on a utility company
How Solar Heating Systems Function
Swimming
Pool Heating
Solar pool heating is simple, reliable, and
affordable. Utilizing
your
existing pump and filtration system, pool water is diverted through
solar thermal panels that heat the water to the desired
temperature.
A typical system consists of solar
collectors mounted on a roof, a solar sensor, and an
automatic control unit. As a rule of thumb, most pools need a
solar array roughly half the size of the
surface area of the pool. Therefore a 16' X 30' pool would need
approximately 240 square feet of solar thermal panels. A sunny
day
above 65 degrees Fahrenheit will result in an 80 degree pool, and in
many cases, extend the swimming season by two months or more.
How the system functions: » Set
the automatic control unit for desired water temperature. » Sensor
detects when there is energy available to heat the pool. » The
pool pump sends cold water from the pool through the solar collectors. » Solar
collectors transfer the sun's heat to the water as it flows back to the
pool. » Sensor
prevents the pool from being
cooled by automatically shutting off and draining the system when there
is no energy available.
Domestic Water Heating
Solar water heating is a cost-effective alternative to gas or
electric water heating systems. Solar
thermal
systems are comprised of solar thermal panels, a heat exchanger,
circulating pump, storage tank, expansion tank, and water lines.
The solar thermal panels are connected in parallel, and usually
installed on a roof or mounted on a ground structure. The heat
exchanger, solar storage tank, and collectors are
connected to the other system components, usually mounted beside or
near your
existing hot water heater.
Easy And Versatile To Install
Because solar thermal systems are
self-contained and modular, they are
easy to install and service, and can be designed to offset some or all
of your current heating costs. A solar collector can be placed on the
roof with the remaining equipment stored in a basement or closet,
usually alongside your existing water heater and tank.
